Black Music Month
Recognizing the rich impact of African American music on American culture and history.
Black Music Month was founded in 1979 by pioneer Kenny Gamble of Gamble and Huff and a group of Black executives who formed the Black Music Association (BMA) in 1978. BMA was created as a larger effort to mobilize black economic power so that they can have more control over our own business.
This year marks the 45th annual commemoration.
In 1979, President Jimmy Carter designated June as a time to celebrate the cultural and historical significance of Black artistry, creativity, and musicianship. He held the first ever Black Music Month celebration on the White House lawn.
Black music is the foundation of American music.
Every genre of music has origins and influences of Black artists there’s the influence of Black artists and creatives. Black Music Month is an opportunity to highlight the contributions of Black artists including promoters, retailers, agents, venue owners, and executives.
THANK YOU for the history lesson. Never knew it was Gable and Huff and Philly International that were the force behind it
