📚 October is National Book Month.
Fahrenheit 451 is a novel by Ray Bradbury published in 1953 (71 years ago) that explores the dangers of censorship and the power of knowledge. It’s set in a dystopian society where books are banned and critical thinking is discouraged while the government places strict regulations on its citizens in hopes of creating an ideal world. Fahrenheit 451 serves as Bradbury’s warning to humanity about the crucial role of knowledge and identity in a society vulnerable to corruption through ignorance, censorship, and the distractions that obscure the truth of our world.
In this book a thinking man is considered a dangerous thing who should be extinguished. Sound familiar?
*“We’re going to meet a lot of lonely people in the next week and the next month and the next year. And when they ask us what we’re doing, you can say, We’re remembering. That’s where we’ll win out in the long run. And someday we’ll remember so much that we’ll build the biggest goddamn steamshovel in history and dig the biggest grave of all time and shove war in it and cover it up.” -Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
